I think its editing and use of music and sweeping cinematography is at times a little melodramatic, like something out of a Michael Bay film. By the time we get to the scenes where they’re flying over the city with megaphones giving emotional support to their P.O.W, it feels more like a dream sequence. I also didn’t like Scott’s direction of the two guys with the M-60…too light-hearted and whimsical given the surrounding scenes. It also focuses too much on the Rangers, and at times is too nice on them, many of whom were hiding in their Humvees and refusing to clear buildings. The Deltas, along with a select few Rangers, kept the operation from being an entire loss and held that group together. And I was disappointed they didn’t show Filmore’s comforting of a Ranger and then subsequent death, which really shook up a lot of the inexperienced kids who looked up to the elite, professional D-boys. Still, gotta love all those low shutter angles and bleach bypass footage. Fairly well done considering the oversights.

Despite the blatant attempt to make Josh Harnett a "Star," Black Hawk Down" is otherwise a fabulous movie. The very capable supporting cast-i.e. Eric Bana, Sam Shepard, Ewen MacGregor etc…….Captain-"Soldier, is that weapon Hot? You know better, that safety needs to be on!"Bana: "This is my safety, (holds up right hand and uses index finger (simulates pulling trigger) this is my safety…."

This movie is about the Soul of Combat Soldiers. In contrast to most Hollywood war movies, Blackhawk Down is highly respectful of the series of moral decisions that human beings make in allowing themselves to be placed into a Battle such as this. Early in the movie Ranger Sgt. Eversman is talking to his fellow Rangers about their presence in Somalia, ‘It seems to me that we can either watch the country destroy itself (the famine and coexisting anarchy having resulted in 300,000 deaths) or we can try to help.’After the battle Delta Sgt. Hooten, talking withEversman, simply and honestly describes the morality of the professional warrior. Hooten recalls he was asked by his civilian friends, “‘Hoot, why do you do it? Are you some kind of war junkie?’ I don’t say a damn thing because they wouldn’t get it. It’s about the men next to you. That’s all.” This moral position may be mentioned in other movies but the makers of Blackhawk Down have eloquently captured it in the behavior of the soldiers in the film. There is even an empathic portrayal of the rage of the Somali militia at the American implication that their culture was so simple and so defective that foreigners would believe they were entitled intrude as they saw fit. There is also an ironic reference to the moral judgement of the Clinton administration. General Garrison is speaking with his officers about the tactical plans for the American action, “I requested gunships and armor to provide additional back-up, but.

It’s a great release overall, but I was a little disappointed that the extended cut of the film is only on the 4K disc, and missing from the standard blu-ray.

This movie spends little time building up to the actual battle. It does develop a few characters and let you get to know them so you care what happens to them, but then it jumps right into the action and just keeps building to the end. The battle scenes are intense and you find yourself almost wanting to duck and cover throughout the movie. It is fairly graphic and hard to watch at times, but it does a great job of showing the bravery of the soldiers who did the best they could in a horrific situation while showing how a lot of little decisions can add up to a big problem later (i.e. don’t take enough water, ammo or night vision because they are heavy and you don’t think you will need them). The recreation of the actions of MSgt Gordon and SFC Shughart who selflessly volunteered to go into a desperate situation to protect a downed helicopter pilot knowing that the chances for survival were extremely poor was especially striking and a little hard to watch knowing that they were awarded posthumous Congressional Medals of Honor for their bravery. Bottom line is that while the movie most certainly is somewhat sensationalized to fit into a 2 hour Hollywood movie format with big budget stars etc, it also does a great job conveying the futility, fog and confusion of modern urban combat.

My father was a 3rd Bat. Ranger, Sgt. Fichtelman. He is what got me interested into the idea of becoming one. So, I ventured forth knowing I was going to enlist, and maybe train to be a Ranger. I got a bit older and watched this film. Suddenly, the idea was locked in; I was going to become a Ranger (not one yet, but in a few years). This movie is one of the most real war movies I have ever watched, and seems to be extremely accurate. It describes one of the harshest events out there (out of the many). This was hell. And this movie shows it. To all veterans out there: Thank you for your service and sacrifice. Not many realize what you have gone through, but some of us will.BUY IT. This movie is spectacular, and good for any audience. Mainly people who are interested in the military. Hooah! Rangers lead the way.

Black Hawk Down was a war film based upon a book of the same name. It covered the real life events that took place in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1993. The United States was deployed to the country as part of a United Nations peacekeeping operation but ended up taking on local warlord Mohammed Farah Aidid with deadly consequences when two Black Hawk helicopters were shot down leading to a long and bloody siege. The movie doesn’t attempt to explain the Somali civil war or even the peace keeping mission. It focuses just on the American fight to retrieve the helicopter crews. In doing so it lays down an intense war drama that showed how ridiculous the American position was.At the start of the film an American Delta team captures one of Aidid’s financiers. He talks to the U.S. commander General Garrison played by Sam Shepard. He tells the general that the U.S. has only been in the country for a few weeks and didn’t know anything. Somalia was in a civil war, and it was their affair meaning the Americans were not welcome and didn’t understand what was going on. That is the background to the battle that would unfold. The heart of the movie is based upon a raid the U.S. makes in downtown Mogadishu to arrest some of Aidid’s main advisers. Aidid’s men were ready and shot down two Black Hawks. The Americans sent in wave after wave of men to get the crews out of those downed copters, which took two days of fighting. The film makes it seem like the whole city was coming down upon the U.S. troops.
