It was good that this film came out, because it’s good to remember the individual sacrifices and heroism that marked this battle. Sadly Hollywood chose to downplay the role of the 10th Mountain Div and the QRF that extracted the Rangers and Delta from the streets of Mogadishu.

WOW. Factual book about a very tragic event in our military history. A mission that was supposed to take 1 hour took about 24 with many American soldiers dead. Met the soldier who had to let go of the rope while dropping from the helicopter because they were being fired upon and the helicopter had to get out of there ended up hitting the ground and he broke his back. He cannot talk about Somalia till this day.

Last night I saw this movie for the probably fifth time, and still I can’t find any flaw in it, for me it is probably the best war movie ever made even though the story is about a relatively minor engagement in an already forgotten police action in a backwater country as Somalia. There are many strong characters but what stands out for me are the exchanges between the characters of Hoot(Eric Bana) and Eversman (Josh Harnett). Hoot is the quintescential warrior, a Delta Forces sargeant that has seen it all, he convines experience with talent and a strong intellect. Eversman is a young man thrown before his time to the burdens of command as his team leader suffers a seizure and cannot continue leading his chalk. The exchanges between these two characters for me are the main part of the movie. Hoot counsels the younger warrior, he demands focus and getting the mission done before letting anguish and guilt take over, his men need him in all his capacity. Eversman grows as a leader and a man as the combat progresses, at the begining he is willing to endager his team and mission to save a young member of his chalk but at the end he thinks and reacts more in the interest and welfare of the entire platoon. Hoots’s charge through the middle of the city to reach (although late) the crash site of the second Black Hawk and then getting in time to save Eversman’s team from a recoiless rifle team at the scene of the main crash site is probably the strongest part of the movie in the act.

Such an amazing film. I am glad it finally has gotten the UHD treatment it deserves. I also appreciate that it includes the extended edition, that was absent from the original Blu-ray copy.

I had never seen this movie and was happy that I never watched the DVD version from Netflix. The Blu-ray version is excellent as are the special features after. They brought new meaning to the movie and the characters. The actor boot camps were worth the price of admission. Highly recommend this, particularly if you haven’t seen it yet.

Awesome movie….stunning special effects and great action. Much of the action is direct from the book of the same name very well done. Actors are superb, nothing really bad to say about it at all. If you like reality based or based on true story films, this is one of the best. Would have gotten 5 stars had it been Blueray for the same price plus the behind the scenes was a little weak but interesting. (I consider behind the scenes very big in the overall rating 5 star would be Lord of the Rings in behind the scenes).

If you got this far, i will skip the plot basics. Suffice to say that this film makes no commentary on the rights or wrongs of the situation, there is no rah-rah flag waving, just pure, honest emotion. The story of the soldiers that faced a difficult situation, their courage and comradship is proof that the ancient art of soldiering has not changed since its early days – its not about the fight, its about the people, the brothers-in-arms that are your family. I strongly recommend this film for its good historical accuracy, lack of political focus, excellent acting, directing, sound and photography.

A good balance between "Hollywood" action film and story telling. Not a one-sided good versus evil either, but really people fighting to survive. US forces are the heroes and underdogs in the movie. I was a bit disappointed that they downplayed the brutality. Not that I wanted to dwell on the ugly moments, but it does lack a sense of how the whole situation came to be. Due to time they also really had to jump into the action with little back story, but that’s the way it goes, right? Still a nice companion to a better book.

There’s a reason this movie was so critically acclaimed. The UHD director’s cut version ends up pushing this even further over the top. If you have Atmos be prepared to be blown away. It is completely immersive with gunfire and chopper sounds so realistic you might duck a few times. If you have UHD player, good 4K TV, and Atmos you MUST have this in your library.

As a Special Forces veteran, I can attest to the authenticity of the depictions of the Delta operators. The actors did a tremendous job in representing the demeanor and professionalism of the Special Forces characters. The story told of the chaos of war and how flawed leadership and decision-making in military operations can go so very wrong, so quickly and how one causal event can cascade into a disaster.
