Raunchy but honest and mostly accurate story of a mission gone bad. It shows not only the action but also the problems that develop when the US is less than 100% committed to the success of its military endeavors. And it shows the horribly troubles nation of Somalia in all its ugly violence. Important story well-told.

I can only watch this film once in a while, because it is based on a true story…and it’s hard to watch. We lost Marines and Rangers. I love our military ♥️

  3. Scott K Lindauer

I will not knock this fantastic movie by dropping stars because of this very poor quality DVD. I bought the 4K to replace the DVD that I’ve watched 1000 times. I couldn’t wait to hear this movie in ATMOS. What A let down. This movie soundtrack skipped, shifted sound, cut out, and the movie locked up several times. Even when it did play the tracking and sound were pretty poor and the DVD sounds better. Do not waste your money on this version.

This is a fantastic movie. I enjoyed it thoroughly. The action sequences are some of the best ever put onto the big screen. The Army Rangers and Delta Force are brave and dedicated in their efforts to capture a violent warlord. The movie focuses entirely on a mission to capture the lieutenants of a violent warlord. It was hoped that their capture would provide new intelligence on the wherabouts of the warlord, which was the ultimate goal. When this incident occurred the President and the country had already lost interest in Somalia. This is reinforced in the movie from what we don’t see- there are no cutaways to politicans and generals in some Pentagon command center debating the proper course of action. Instead General Garrison(Sam Shepherd) is reminded by a subordinate to keep Washington apprised. The movie takes place on the day leading up to the mission and the day itself. Shortly after the Rangers commence their well orchestrated operation things go badly awry. The commanders, coordinating events from blackhawk helicopters, rush to adapt as casualities mount. The sequences of soldiers confronting the Warlord’s militia and an overwhelming number of hostile citizens are gripping. The actors give fine performances and no doubt received much technical training from military advisers. Eric Bana is superb as a seen it all Delta Force soldier who gives comfort to a less experienced Army Ranger Sgt. One oddity though is Tom Sizemore who plays Colonel McKnight. All of the soldiers.

Sad, but it happened. This movie tells you how it happened in Somalia. I still remember the real news about this “incident”.

I refused to buy the first edtiion of BLACKHAWK DOWN and I am glad I waited. This 3 disk set is loaded with extras inclusing two documentaries on the actual event, production notes and other extras. This is not a proud moment for the political leadership in this country, but it is an exception moment for the Rangers and Delta force soldiers. The action in Mogadishu was the largest firefight since Vietnam. Ridley Scott’s movie captures the essense, the valor and heroism of what took place. It also makes the point that Task force Ranger was not permitted to finish the job. Perhaps, if they had, history might have been different. This is a must have edition to your collection of military and war movies.

  7. Chinkie

Enlightening movie but some parts are so graphic that I had to hide my eyes. After seeing the movie, I now understand what happened in Somalia in 1993 when 19 servicemen were tragically lost trying to help people they did not know. The movie is a testament to their strength and courage. It broke my heart to see that they had to run out on their own at the end (because there was no room on the Humvees for them) even though most of them were very badly wounded….but see this movie. It is well worth it.

For depth and deep military drama nothing comes close to the direction of this true story directed by the director of Gladiator. I remember seeing this in theatres and the drama and can-do spirit to fight is just incredible under un surmountable odds. Seeing this now available on 4k brings back all that tense and emotion again. Fans of this movie will not be disappointed worth owning and seeing again.
