A deeply misunderstood game, DiRT 2 proves two things to the PSP owner: the unit itself is still a capable machine, and that console releases can be compressed into a playable and technically accomplished PSP title. Much like the console versions, DiRT 2 takes what is unique about rally and off-road racing and serves it up on a silver platter. The distractions and infinitesimal details of racing simulators are thankfully put aside here, and we are taken across the most extreme and beautiful of locations to drive our top-class machines across. This is where the game excels, for the locations are unique, varied, and actually makes a difference to the races. A `Trailblazer’ event, for example, sees the player behind a Nissan Z or BMW Z4 flying across tundra and snow fields of Iceland. Here, the game shows us that racing is all about two things: your machine and your surface, for Codemasters have made the effort to create a contrast between the constantly varying surfaces of the road. Sliding across a snow-drift (ice-planing?) comes to a halt when you hit a patch of exposed asphalt – the sudden grip is announced as a tyre squeak as it drags you back into line.Desert locations echo that of the console version admirably, and the table-tops and long, banked corners (each remembering your previous lap’s tyre tracks) are included here too. Your F150 or Dodge Ram flies across and over these things as if mere inconveniences, landing you nose-down (realistically) and challenging you to no.

After playing this game I agree from the previous reviews that some of the sound effects are not high quality and that it is true that the AI becomes very cheesy at the Pro level. However, being a gamer since the NES days, when playing this game I can’t help remembering old titles such as Test Drive 4 (PSX), Need for Speed 1,2,3 Hot Pursuit (PSX) and Hot Pursuit 2 (PS2) as this game retains a rather simple playability yet can be entertaining for hours on end, just as those previously mentioned. Many games now a days are more on the graphics and flashy promotions and have a restricted playability and depth, leaving more to be desired, but this one sure goes back to arcade racing roots, like many of this type should be. All what’s needed is to add a few more cars/body kits and tracks, and correct the AI for a solid game.

I picked this game up the other day because I really like “Dirt” for the PS3/360/PC. Dirt 2 for the PSP a fun game with a variety of racing types. I’ve enjoyed it much more than Gran Turismo. The graphics are pretty good and the handling is a good mix between sim and arcade. My only real complaint is the sound and the reason why I gave it 4 stars. The engine noise and jingle from the suspension is pretty lame. As the tile of my review states, I’m not sure why this game is only $20, its worth more!

The game is good but the world tour is very short and the cars handle terribly but there is still some fun stuff too do.

Dirt 2 is a fine racing title for the PSP. It possess great graphics, gameplay and replayability to satisfy the cravings of racing fans everywhere. Get ready for some serious offroad action.
