I have always believed that a book finds you, if it wants you to read it. I think that happens to most of us – to the reader who waits patiently for the book to come along and take him or her on a ride that cannot be forgotten. Two people and very different people at that told me to read, “The Shadow of the Wind”. I had the book in my possession, however had not read it till then. I always wanted to, but did not. I guess my time had to come on its own. I had to wait for the book and it has been a wait worth it like no other.”The Shadow of the Wind” by Carlos Ruiz Zafon is everything you expect from a well-written book. The plot makes you turn the pages. The sentences and language make you fall in love with the writer’s thought process. The characters make you connect with them at all levels of human emotions and more than anything else, this book is about love for literature and reading, and not letting the written word die.The book is about the search of a boy, Daniel Sempere for the truth about the fate of Julian Carax, the author of a mystery novel (also named The Shadow of the Wind). Daniel adopts the book when his father, a bibliophile and a bookseller takes him to the metaphorical (or real) Cemetery of Forgotten Books and it is there that he owns the book and gets embroiled in its author’s life. He sets out to search for more books written by him and to know what happened to him. In all of this, he learns of someone who is named after one of Carax’s characters and has s.

“Few things leave a deeper mark on a reader than the first book that finds its way into his heart. Those first images, the echo of words we think we have left behind, accompany us throughout our lives and sculpt a palace in our memory to which, sooner or later–no matter how many books we read, how many worlds we discover, or how much we learn or forget–we will return.”This is how i feel about this book. Its amazingI thoroughly enjoyed reading it and didn’t want to put it down. It gripped me from the start. The book is filled with mystery, gothic atmosphere, romance and even laughter. Fermin is an absolute classic I couldn’t stop laughing at the things he would say.I have already read this book twice and I can guarantee you I would read it again. I have blogged about it – and now alot of my friends are reading it too and they are loving it.Many times I have read books by foreign authors and while the story line is great, somehow the language is funny. I must say Lucia Graves translated this well. A good piece of literature! Well done Carlos. And good job on the translation, Lucia – the languages just purrs along :)

I loved reading this book. What an adventure. My first introduction to this author and I am so excited to read more of his work. The other reviews will give you a synopsis of the book. I just want to say you won’t regret taking on this book and you will not easily forget the characters.

“The Shadow of The Wind” is a brilliant,, well written, often ornate work of literary art. At the same time it is a long intricate story with numerous characters whose lives intertwine in complicated ways. The story is also often extremely dark. Different readers are looking for different types of reading experiences. If one is looking for a light entertaining read, this book may not be what one wants. This fine novel includes romance, intrique, violence, and high literature. The description of scenery is very picturesque. The primary setting is Barcelona in the early and mid twentieth century. The book is an international best shop. When an author writes in an extremely descriptive manner, I feel I owe it to the author to take my time and carefully read the words. I did so here and it took me quite a bit of time to read this book. After a while, I had trouble keeping track of both the characters and the storyline. To be honest about it, I do not feel I always have the highest taste. This is a good example of this. This is great literature, yet by the end of the book, I was weary of reading the book and was really ready for the story to end. I am somewhat embarrassed to admit this. After this book was written and published, the author then wrote a prequel, “The Angel’s Game”. In that this is a prequel, I read it first. “The Angel’s Game” is shorter and also extremely well written. I felt it was somewhat more opaque and I did not understand it as well as “The Shad.

I gave this 4 stars as the first half of the book was definitely a five star book, but the latter half was definitely a three star novel.Where to begin… I read this as it was highly recommended to me and I wanted to read something that I normally wouldn’t read on my own. Once I got used to Zafon’s style of writing (it’s a bit cheesy and made me lol at some points) and got into the book I was fascinated. I loved it. I loved the plot, loved the characters and really thought it was going to be my favorite book of the year. Not only that, but I kept telling everyone that I loved this book. I couldn’t put it down – until I reached the crux of the book.I don’t want to give too much away, but I did not care for the ending at all. I felt cheated by the way Zafon decided to wrap it all up in a nice little package and go on his way.Overall, I would still recommend this as a good read as the first half was HIGHLY entertaining, but cannot call it a favorite as I was disappointed in the how Zafon concluded the plot.

The author seamlessly weaves several storylines about multiple characters with such detail that the pages fly by. The details of different places and time periods in Barcelona make the reader feel Ike they could roam the city themselves. The author does a fine job developing all of the main characters. Definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for an enjoyable, period mystery.

This was one of the better written books that I’ve read in awhile – beautiful descriptions without feeling tedious, a fascinating story that gets more complex with each chapter, but brilliantly. I really enjoyed this book which seemed to offer a little bit of everything – it is really a mammoth of a story, where Zafon takes his time to tell seemingly every story and quaint thought he’s ever had, but somehow managed to do it brilliantly, in my opinion. You get a little bit of everything here – gothic, dark descriptions, a massive cast of characters, each with their own secrets and stories – the book is peppered with life lessons and ruminations, ridiculous humor, heart breaking turns of events and moments of hope in the middle of despair. I found it gritty and depressing and yet breath taking and filled with a sense that “maybe things can still work out” even when it seems unlikely, or even impossible.

Was looking for a couple of books to take on a beach vacation. This was one I ordered based on the reviews I read. It is an excellent book… very well written. As the story got going there were a number of interesting twists and turns in the story line. Would highly recommend.

I picked this up at an airport on a long trip to help save battery life on my electronic devices. Despite being dead tired, I found the book completely engaging and when I got home, I forced myself to savor it and not finish it too quickly. Then I bought the Kindle version so I could carry it around with me.The novel was translated from Spanish, and it carries the lyricism of language and thought that’s characteristic of so much good Spanish writing. (There’s a little flavor of Gabriel Garcia Marquez.) It’s not quite Magical Realism, but an air of the supernatural hovers over the plot. It was a great blend of family saga, mystery, narratives within narratives, the wonder and preciousness of books, determination of character, and beautiful insight into human nature. The plot is complex, the characters memorable and Zafon writes gorgeously.I don’t know that I would rank it among the classics, because I don’t think it’s that kind of book. It’s more along the level of Robert Harris, perhaps, or Stieg Larsson…only cast along the line of Spanish romanticism. It’s a page-turner illustrating the complexities of human relationships and emotions during a sparer, bygone era.

The story line was extremely convoluted and took its sweet time getting told. Not that the end result wasn’t interesting. It took several letters or telling of stories to move it along . Not always an easy read.
