I absolutely loved this story! The 82nd book I’ve read in 2018, and one of the best so far. A complex, spiraling story-within-a-story, I loved every page of this one. Two more books in this series and I’ll read them. Highly recommended.

  2. MsLynn

Read this book a few years ago in paperback. Wanted on my Kindle to read again. It’s one of those books you want to experience again. If you love books and love to read you will love this book. Have also read others by this author. If you like books that are like a movie in your mind while reading you will love this one. The Cemetery of Forgotten books give you a visual that will live in your mind forever.

What more could I possibly add to 877 reviews that will help illuminate your appreciation of this book?I stumbled onto this book by accident, and what a joy! The author writes incredibly well and the story is amazing. I usually get lost when there is a combination of past/present and a lot of characters. Somehow, I managed to stay with the storyline here. How can you not read a book where one of the first paragraphs reads, “One of the pitfalls of childhood is that one doesn’t have to understand something to feel it. By the time the mind is able to comprehend what happened, the wounds of the heart are already too deep.”Simply amazing.Anyhow, this is a great book. Good character development, nice flow, and an incredible story. Enjoy.

I unlike many people that write reviews, am not an avid reader but a passionate one. I love to immerse myself in books that make me live out and experience what the words spell out. It does not happen often but I have found new life in the emotional rollercoaster that Mr. Zafon has put me through. The author’s vocabulary is beyond expectation at times. You will feel like you lived in Barcelona by the time you are done. I lived, cried, and loved with Daniel and his story and I know you will too. I will also never forget Fermin and his antics, which will make you want a friend like him! This author demonstrates a magnificent ease to tell a story so complete with sexual desire, passion, sadness and the ultimate resolution and satisfaction of resolve, that you will crave more. I know I have.

The only reasons I gave this 4 rather than 5 stars are these: The book is a translation so I found some small places where the writing seemed a bit stilted with commas scattered in weird places–which bugs me. Also, and more importantly, I found the concept of a cemetery of lost books to be a bit silly. Lastly, it took a LONG time to get into the book. Since the prose was excellent, I went with it and read on; something I will only do if the writer is excellent, and this writer does write brilliantly. If you have patience and love to read a book with lots of intertwined stories, you will love "The Shadow of the Wind." It is beautifully written and well worth the time it takes to be "drawn in" to the story.

  6. J. E. Whipple

It is a well-thought out mystery. Who is trying to burn every book written by Julián Carax, and why? What danger are Daniel Sempere and his friends in because he is known to possess the last copy of Carax’s masterpiece "The Shadow of the Wind"? How has he become a target for the murderous Chief Inspector Fumero? The mystery spans two generations and all strata of Barcelona’s populace. The book is populated with numerous characters, and about halfway through, I felt there were so many that had come in and out of the story that I had lost track of them and wasn’t sure who was who among the lesser characters. But the rest of the story brought them into focus and made connections clear. After a slow start, with a number of suspenseful moments, it became increasingly gripping as the mystery was solved, with a satisfying dénouement. The author makes frequent references to locations and streets on the city. If they are not fictional names, it is tantalizing not to know the geography of the city.

The Shadow of the Wind tells the story of a boy named Daniel who discovers a book of the same title and becomes obsessed with it and its author, the mysterious Julián Carax. Early on we learn that all books by Julián Carax are very rare and becoming more so with each passing day, since someone is methodically buying and burning every copy he can lay his hands on. Why this is happening is the underlying mystery which drives the plot forward. Carlos Ruiz Zafon masterfully reveals plot elements a little at a time as they are discovered by Daniel. Readers of this novel will be introduced to a whole host of well fleshed out and interesting characters in both Daniel’s timeline and past events as they are related to Daniel by other characters who each know bits and pieces of the mystery surrounding Julián. Both stories (Julián’s and Daniel’s) are complex and interesting. This is one fulfilling read! 5/5

One of our favorite books. Carlos Luis Zafon is so descriptive that you’ll feel as if you’ve been to Spain. We actually were in Spain after reading this book and even though it was about 70 years after the book’s time period, we still could recognize much of the Barcelona he described. You’ll feel as if you know the characters personally after reading this book. Years after reading the book, if one of my family members mentioned Fermin, I’d instantly miss him and what book lover wouldn’t fantasize about a cementary of forgotten books? I highly recommend this book

  9. Marmee

This is a book that will stay in my memory. The writer is reminiscent of Dickens. Characters are full of life and of light and dark. The story unfolds and keeps you always wanting more. Not too fond of the way he is about religion but that seems to be the way of the world now. Looking forward to what this writer has to offer in the future.

You know those books where you pick ’em up and then you discover five hours have passed and you’re late getting ready for work? This is that book.Mr Zafon’s book is engrossing, the characters are so rich you feel you know them, and can picture them in your mind, even the villains. His descriptions of post-war Barcelona is so deliciously evocative, you can feel yourself riding the trams through the neighbourhoods to follow the characters around in that place and time. When you finish this book, you will feel torn away from friends when you close the cover. However, you can reunite with them again in Zafon’s "The Prisoner Of Heaven" which picks up with the characters.HIghly recommend this if you love mystery, adventure and well-drawn characters.
