Interesting new variety of a card game. Very easy to learn. Like that you can converse and know what your competitor’s scores are. Trying to get the lowest score at the end of the hand requires luck and strategy.

Skyjo has undoubtedly become my favorite card game of the year. It’s easy to set up, simple to play, yet has a layer of complexity to its strategy, while also incorporating sheer luck. It’s very similar to the card game Golf. So how does it work? The ultimate goal is to keep the score low. The deck of cards contains values as low as -2 and as high as 12, so a player wants to swap out their high cards for lower ones, in order to end up with the lowest total score at the end of the round. However, at the beginning of the round, players have no idea which cards are in their collection! Each player lays out a 3×4 grid of facedown cards. During a turn, a player can take the top card from either the draw or discard pile, then exchange it for a card in the grid (faceup or facedown, doesn’t matter). Herein lies the luck component, because one might draw the low number of 3 and take a chance on exchanging it with an unseen card, only to find that the hidden card was a 0! Each movement is a bit of risk. Upon drawing a high number, a player may immediately discard it–but they must also immediately flip an unseen card. Play continues until one player has revealed every card in the grid, at which point, all players reveal their cards and add up their scores. A new round begins, and the game goes on until one player reaches 100 points! There may be a player who gets lucky and ends up with lots of low cards in the deck, which may entice them to race through the game, forcing others to get stu.

This is a simple to learn easy to play card game for the family to enjoy together. My 5 year old enjoys playing this, and it’s a nice game to play if you have young children playing, or need something to play with the grandparents. It’s a nice alternative to Uno. However, the game is fairly simple, relies a lot on luck and less on strategy. What other people play rarely affects your turn. It’s a nice game but if you’re looking for something that requires "card sense" and skill, look elsewhere. Basically this is a game where you are trying to get your cards to have the lowest total possible, so moves are like "Do I take this face up card with a 5 on it, or hope the card face down on the top of the draw pile has a lower number?" For the younger kids, it reinforces taking turns and basic addition skills and feels like a "grown up" game. Our family enjoys playing it and I have given it as gifts. However, advanced gamers would want something more substantial.
