Great book. Mark of the thief is actually a book my son read in his 5th grade class and I chose to read it with him. It was so good I had to read the second. The second was better than the first! I canâ€™t wait to read the next one

The intensity and humor will bring you into the heat of the enchanting and inspiring 2nd book in the best and truly amazing Mark of the Thief series.It’s sad to leave Caela, the griffin that was sent from the gods to protect the bulla. However, Callistus, Nicolas Calvas’ pet unicorn makes a startling entrance and appears to be the calf of the unicorn that Radulf killed while giving him the Divine Star. As Nic’s list of enemies is increasing, he’s also having trouble with his list of friends. What will happen to Nicolas in the tremendous second book in the trilogy? Read it and find out!

I enjoyed this second book in the Mark of the Thief series. Nic gets himself into lots of trouble but he’s also pretty resourceful in getting himself out of it (or just simply through it). There were lots of interesting historical bits in the story about this time period in Rome and the customs and beliefs in the different Roman gods. I did think the romance aspect seemed a little out of place at times for characters as young as they were, but that’s probably also related to the time period. Definitely a cliffhanger ending!

The story picked up where it ended in book one. In this second installment, Nic Kevlar was now a gladiator in Rome, and he strived so hard to protect his loved ones from his enemies but to no avail. The high-ranking officials of Rome would not stop antagonizing him until he gave in. My knowledge of Roman history was only to the extent of movie adaptations. The author executed the scenes almost as if I was actually in the book. I could feel the hardship of Nic. The story brought all sort of emotions out of me. One moment I wanted to choke Nic for his stubbornness and not learning anything from his past experience, and then one moment I just wanted to hold and console him. The audiobook I borrowed from the public library contained a bonus part explaining the reason of the mistress’ imprisonment. I was so thankful for it. Gah, now I have to wait for the third installment to come out. ðŸ˜¡

Combine Harry Potter and Game of Thrones plots and writing stiles and you have a great book. It’s not as slow as Lord of the Rings books but it’s not as quick as Harry Potter. It’s a nice change up. I really enjoyed the read.

Nicâ€™s difficult, action-packed life continues in this second installment as he finds himself once again caught in the Praetor War. The Praetors are on the hunt for the Malice of Mars, the second powerful amulet and they are certain Nic is the one to obtain it. As his family is threatened, Nic has no choice but to comply with their demands.I personally like this book better than the first; it held my attention more and the characters seemed to better connect in this one. Perhaps it is because Nic is learning to trust and his relationship with Aurelia, Crispus, and even Radulf deepen. The chariot race is an exciting element of the story and similar to the first, readers get a glimpse of how life was in Rome. Of course, it ends on a cliffhanger and we once again fear for Nic’s life, but we know he will somehow overcome the danger and end out the victor!
