This is a great story. Engaging, thoughtfully written, fun twists and lots of heroism. A great follow up to book one. Looking forward to book three.

  2. L. Porter

It was awesome! I love Nicholas Calva! My favourite part was when Nicholas and Brutus went into the temple of the gods

  3. Jolene Alldredge

This. Book. Was. Amazing. I started the third book right after this, knowing it would be great too. I recommend this book for any book readers, big and small, for a thrilling adventure and great cliff hangers.

I’m a fan of Jennifer Nielsen’s books. Once started, it’s hard to put this one down. The ending was rather abrupt, which means that we have to wait until the next volume is released to find out what happens, but that gives me something to look forward to.

The story picked up where it ended in book one. In this second installment, Nic Kevlar was now a gladiator in Rome, and he strived so hard to protect his loved ones from his enemies but to no avail. The high-ranking officials of Rome would not stop antagonizing him until he gave in. My knowledge of Roman history was only to the extent of movie adaptations. The author executed the scenes almost as if I was actually in the book. I could feel the hardship of Nic. The story brought all sort of emotions out of me. One moment I wanted to choke Nic for his stubbornness and not learning anything from his past experience, and then one moment I just wanted to hold and console him. The audiobook I borrowed from the public library contained a bonus part explaining the reason of the mistress’ imprisonment. I was so thankful for it. Gah, now I have to wait for the third installment to come out. 😡

Jennifer A. Nielsen visited my kids school and they fell in love with her. They love her books and I love they are reading. So far I am hearing this book is great from the 11 and 13 year old.

    Kid loved it

  10. Kindle Customer

Love it, can’t wait till the next book. One of my favorite authors, even though she was a school teacher.
