Mafia 2 feels like your watching a movie but at the same time you take control of all the action and get to drive… a lot… The story is well written, has its quirks in my book, and ends beautifully… Overall a fun ride for a week or less, most likely a one timer for most people but has replay capability.Pros:-Great Graphics in 1080-Gunplay and cover system is fun-Great storyline and plays like a movie “ride”-Cool Classic CarsCons:-some parts of the storyline and the way characters act is kinda hokey. You can tell this game wasn’t developed by americans…-driving… way too much travel. 6 of the 12 hours of the game are spent driving, back and forth, all over the map, over and over…-not enough “activities”-not enough stores or places to go into-no shooting while driving, also the “shooters” that do ride with you suck horriblyOverall this game is at least worth checking out, but like stated before it will most likely be a one timer for most people..

I bought this game through a goldbox deal on retrolio. I did not buy it brand new at $60. I can understand those who did buy it at that price might be upset.I’m the type of gamer who does not buy games at $60. I’ll wait until the game drops in price and buy it new or used several months after the fact. I’m not on the cutting edge. So, I missed all of the hype (positive and negative) for this game.I’m also the type of gamer who has but a few hours a week to devote to gaming. I can claw out 10 hours, maybe, between a job, social life, etc, to play. While I can appreciate GTA IV or Mass Effect 2, I can’t readily plunk down the 40 hours it takes to make it through them (and understand that I’ve started Mass Effect 2 and GTA IV but had to give them up because a lack of continuity of play tends to ruin those games). Before I bought Mafia II I read a curious review at Eurogamer (one of my few trusted gaming review sites). Eurogamer did not like the game at all. Now I understand why. Eurogamer wanted “GTA: 1940s” (they were probably giddy when Rockstar’s LA Noir came out). When the reviewer went in with that expectation, they were very upset that it did not live up to that expectation.Mafia II is not a sandbox game. It uses an engine that would support a sandbox game. This is merely as a means to establish a place and tone, which Mafia II does very well (those early 1940s chapters are especially well done, with radio DJs talking about the war, the look of buildings and cars.

Having played the first Mafia game many years ago, I was pleasantly surprised to see that Mafia 2 has been out for quite some time, at such an affordable price! I really like the gameplay in Mafia 2–the controls are easy to learn, and they just work well, e.g., accelerating/braking/steering when driving, and the aim/fire/reload/duck controls during combat. The soundtrack is also really, really good. I recommend getting the Platinum Version if you can find it, because it has all the expansion packs, including the three additional storylines (Joe’s Adventures, and the two Jimmy stories). I enjoyed the final boss levels the most, and the level where Vinny and Joe plant a bomb in an office building. Highly recommended! One suggestion: install the game onto your Xbox (hopefully you have the 250GB hard drive version) because if you accidentally move your Xbox or in my case, accidentally turned the Xbox upside-down vertically, you can scratch the disc and the game won’t be playable–certain areas of the map won’t load properly, and you’ll find yourself falling all of a sudden.

I’ve been buying a lot of older games, since there’s not much that catches my interest for Ps4, at the moment. So while waiting for red dead redemption 2, I picked up Mafia 2 platinum hits edition for like $15 or something. I’m somebody that really doesn’t care for fantasy games, FPS, or anything to do with zombies/monsters. I grew up playing GTA, Mario, and sports games, and that’s still all I play. This game is really good, I think I’ve made it to like chapter 11, or something, idk how many chapters there are.The shootouts on this game are really good, it’s challenging at times, but never frustrating, it’s got a good cover system similar to red dead redemption, and weapon selection, actually matters which is great. The cars are awesome, since the game is set in the 40s/50s driving is a little different, it’s more period appropriate, there aren’t many cars fast enough to lose control, but there are some, and some of them handle and/or brake terribly. The city is beautifully done, with lots of detailed periodically styled buildings, and alot of actual interiors, as well as interactive places: bars, diners, restaurants, stores, and I think there’s a strip club. The story, so far, is really interesting and entertaining, cutscenes feel like a mob movie, voice acting is great, the characters are colorful and unique, except for Vito, who is the main guy, he’s likeable, but is kind of the typical dry/serious video game tough guy, but the supporting characters more than make up for.

Have to say its amazing how many people want to immediately compare and contrast this game to GTA, when it never even claimed to be similar. Make no mistake this is very much a linear story driven tale with added flexibility and nothing more. You’ll probably find that a lot of the “pro” reviews talk about the mundane combat systems (fists and guns). There is some truth to this, especially in the fist fight department. Its a never changing system that once you learn (only takes a few fights) you won’t ever lose. Which isnt terrible certainly have been worse fighting systems, its just that after the first dozen fights or so when you see a fight is coming you almost think sigh… Here goes. The gun system isn’t half as horrible as a lot of people seem to think. Is it ultra innovative and flawless? Absolutely not, in some cases it can almost seem dated as sometimes you’ll be behind cover (talking like solid concrete walls) and your still taking damage from head on gun fire. This can get to be a bit frustrating but by no means is it a game breaker. The driving system is average, nothing to complain about (At least nothing that will make u hate the game) and nothing really that exciting either. The key to keep in mind with this game is that you’re playing the game to drive the story forward. Some games are all about the game play and the story is, meh… Not Mafia II. Whether or not you fall in love with this game is going to primarily depend on how you love or hate t.

Over all I loved this game. How it starts out is smart. 2k’s way of doing things is simple but strategically arranged. It starts out with you in a war,(You got in trouble with your old pal Joe) fighting in Sicily.(where you were from) After a while you get back to the city. The small missions for the Mafia are cool, but I do reccomend driving around the city in bettween them to see what you can find, and just have some fun. All in all this is a very good game and the price is nice so, this is deffinetly a good investment
