Other reviews have gone into way more detail about this game and its variety of systems, so I’m going to focus rather on my personal opinion and response to the game when I first played it. When first starting the game, I was amazed at how much it felt like I was playing an anime cartoon. The game is presented in a mix of anime cutscenes mixed with picture backdrops and cut-out character portraits with multiple poses per character. The majority of your time in the game will be in the dating-sim portion of it where you literally read text and do responses in a variety of fashions, be it a simple selection between multiple choices or actively moving your control sticks to on screen prompts to provide a response. The actions and choices you make and do have a direct impact on your relationships with just about every person you meet in the game. This carries over into the tactical battle portion which is rendered in full 3D rather than pictures. You can be a complete charmer and have everyone love you and thus get the best battle bonuses or be a complete dick and have a rougher time on battles since everyone is limited in both movement, power and speed. The battles, albeit repetative after a while, do have their charm and are quite entertaining with lots of simple tactical choices to make. It really doesn’t get difficult and the last chapter, which is good considering there is no ‘leveling up’ in this game. Downside however, is the crashing/freezing bugs. The only way I’ve read tha.

To describe this game it is little bit of a dating sim, meets a role playing game, meets Phoenix Wright(see Nintendo DS), and meets a Japanese Anime. To play this game you have to be patience with it. It starts out very slow(about 20 to 25 min of dialog screens) but most of the scene the characters are talking(it’s like watching a cartoon that you interact with). Your are trying to build up your teams spirit/togetherness( the better your team feels about you as leader affects how they your female team members attributes help you in battle). The battles are the best part of this game. If you ever play Skies of Arcadia for Dreamcast than you will feel right at home. The battle scenarios you actually take control of steam power robots to take out the bad guys. It will take team work to beat all the bosses in battle. This is a great hidden jem for the Wii. If you like Role-playing games this is a must buy but if you want a different game play experience give this game a try.

A wonderful, absorbing game with an excellent storyline. We played it for ages. It’s perfect for the anime lover especially in the building relationships scenes. The battle scenes do need some game skills.

Developers: Sega/ Idea Factory (Wii)Publisher: NIS AmericaPlatforms: PlayStation 2, Nintendo WiiGenre: Strategy RPGRating: TeenRelease Date: March 30th, 2010Story Set in 1928 New York, Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love tells the story of Shinjiro Taiga as he tries to earn his place as a member of the New York Combat Revue’s Star Division. The city of New York is growing and quickly becoming the melting pot for the United States, but with the growth comes all of the sin and malice that comes from so many different people living together as the still young country and city are trying to find their true identity. With so many immigrants from many different places the city and it people begin to collect a large number of foreign relics and artifacts, as a way of giving its people a sense of where they came from. These new acquisitions however posses unknown dark energies and in a city so new and ever growing it gives these unknown entities a whole new place to flourish. Young Shinjiro Taiga who has just finished training is excited to be joining Japan’s Imperial Defense Force, until that is, he learns that he won’t be joining them. Instead of being a member of his uncle’s, Ogami Ichiro, team he will be moving to New York in order to assist the New York Combat Revue, Star Division. Upon his arrival though he soon finds that he isn’t what the team was expecting and thus begins to question his place in the metropolis of New York. Players will take on the role of Shinjiro as he earns his.

Sakura Wars 5 is an excellent game, both for old players and newcomers. Unlike Tokyo or Paris, the game resets the stage at New York in the 20s. One thing I like about this series is that it injects so much energy into the player that when he or she plays, it totally changes the atmosphere of the room. The characters are all distinguished; and they interact with the player quite well, almost as if they are real people with real concerns in their lives. While the dialogues come back and forth, the characters hope the player can understand their feelings. This is what makes this dating RPG very unique for decades. Rarely do I see another game that carries the same level of emotional interaction with the player so far.Other than the famous LIPS dating simulations, SW5 also combines local culture into stage design, usually in a lovely fashion. The evolutionary combat system is easy to maneuver and the challenge won’t drive one crazy. Great music and drama remain the SW tradition that is carried from SW1~4. Although SW5 is a fresh start, the intriguing player experience has been successfully preserved. I sincerely hope that the team will continue carrying this love and its music to more people that have not tried this series yet; that is the mission of the new Star Division!

Great game in some ways, it’s interesting how it tries to portray New York and each character is developed quite well. The turn based strategy is weird but works well. Sometimes the game runs terribly mid-combat.

Its more about your relationships with the other characters, but this is a great Japanese strategy/dating sim. Im glad they decided to port this to the Wii. The art is wonderful, the characters likable, and the game in entertaining for the most part. Note that action isnt the focus of this game so much as character interaction.

This is the kind of game that usually would never make it out of Japan. Thankfully it did, and it’s awesome. For an Otakus or general Japan lovers who own a wii and are looking for an RPG or dating sim to hold you over? Look no further. Sakura wars offers deep, fun combat along with excellent dating sim elements. Control how nice you are to certain characters and get on the good sides of your favourites and eventually pick your dating partner of choice out of six potential candidates, all having redeeming qualities to them. The main story is about 15 hours long, but to fully enjoy the game you need to do multiple playthroughs, getting the different endings and candid pictures of your girls. Theres honestly not much more I can say. Fun and intricate combat for RPG lovers, adorable and engrossing love aspects for the romantic in all of us, and tons of collectables, side dialogues, pictures, cutscenes and endings to collect for a gargantuan replay value. If any of this sounds intriguing to you, stop reading this review and BUY THIS GAME!
