Super Mario Sunshine

Super Mario Sunshine is a 2002 platform game develop and publish by Nintendo for the GameCube. It is the second 3D game in the Super Mario series, following Super Mario 64 (1996). The game was direct by Yoshiaki Koizumi and Kenta Usui. Produce by series creators Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka, written by Makoto Wada. And score by Koji Kondo and Shinobu Tanaka.

However, the game takes place on the tropical Isle Delfino, where Mario, Toadsworth, Princess Peach. And five Toads are taking a vacation. A villain resembling Mario, known as Shadow Mario, vandalizes the island with graffiti. And leaves Mario to be wrongfully convict for the mess. Also Mario is order to clean up Isle Delfino, using a device the Flash Liquidizer Ultra Dousing Device (F.L.U.D.D.). While saving Princess Peach from Shadow Mario.

Super Mario Sunshine receive critical acclaim, with reviewers praising the game’s graphics, gameplay, story, soundtrack, and the addition of F.L.U.D.D. as a mechanic. Though some criticize the game’s camera and F.L.U.D.D.’s gimmicky nature. Moreover, the game sold over five million copies worldwide by 2006, making it one of the best-selling GameCube games. The game was re-release as a part of the Player’s Choice brand in 2003. Nintendo EPD rerelease it alongside Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy in the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection for the Nintendo Switch in 2020.

Gameplay

Super Mario Sunshine shares many similar gameplay elements with its predecessor, Super Mario 64, while introducing various new gameplay features. Players control Mario as he tries to obtain 120 Shine Sprites in order to bring light back to Isle Delfino and prove his innocence. After Bowser Jr. (disguise as Mario) steals the Shine Sprites and covers the island in toxic slime. Players start off in the hub world of Delfino Plaza and access various worlds via portals which become available as the game progresses.

Similar to collecting Stars in Super Mario 64, players obtain Shine Sprites by clearing a select mission with a specific objective. Unlike its predecessor, these missions have a more strictly linear order and most other mission Shine Sprites cannot collect until the previous missions are complete. There are also various hidden areas and challenges across Isle Delfino where more Shine Sprites can be obtain. Throughout the game, players may also find Blue Coins hidden across the island, which can be exchange for more Shine Sprites in the boathouse at Delfino Plaza.

F.L.U.D.D. (Flash Liquidizing Ultra Dousing Device)

However, in this game, Mario is join by a robotic backpack name F.L.U.D.D. (Flash Liquidizing Ultra Dousing Device). Which uses the power of water to clean away goop and help Mario reach new places. Mario starts with two default nozzles for F.L.U.D.D. Squirt and Hover, which he can quickly switch between. The Squirt nozzle lets Mario spray a stream of water which he can use to clean sludge, attack enemies, and activate certain mechanisms. The Hover nozzle lets Mario hover in the air for a short period of time, allowing him to cross large gaps while simultaneously spraying things directly below him.

As the game progresses, Mario unlocks two additional nozzles for F.L.U.D.D. Which can be substitute with the Hover nozzle: the Rocket nozzle. It shoots Mario high up into the air; and the Turbo nozzle. And moves Mario at high speeds, allowing him to run across water and break into certain areas. Each of F.L.U.D.D.’s nozzles use water from its reserves, which can be refill via water sources such as rivers or fountains.

Secret Courses

There are also various secret courses where F.L.U.D.D. is taken away from Mario, forcing him to rely on his natural platforming abilities. Unlike Super Mario 64, Mario can no longer long jump. He can instead perform a spin jump by twirling the analog stick and jumping, allowing Mario to jump higher and farther. Mario can also now perform dives at any time, giving Mario the ability to slide quickly across wet surfaces and serve as another alternative to the long jump.

At certain points in the game, Mario may come across an egg which hatches into a Yoshi after being brought a fruit he asks for. Yoshi can be ridden upon and can attack by spitting juice. Which can clear certain obstacles that water cannot. Yoshi can also use his tongue to eat enemies or other pieces of fruit which change his color, depending on the type of fruit. Yoshi will disappear if he runs out of juice or falls into deep water. Juice can be replenish by eating more fruit.

This whole collection is awesome and Super Mario 64 is still #1 when it comes to 3D Mario games. It’s awesome being able to play all these games on a handheld. I love how mysterious the castle of Mario 64 is. Going to where the Hazy Maze Cave areas are and where you go to drain the castle moat. The whole atmosphere is a part of why I love it so much. I love castles and I love how there’s this black hole where the balls roll into in Hazy Maze Cave, the horizontal elevator and the music where you find Dorrie is really awesome. I love the waterfall outside the castle and the pole jumping inside the volcano in the Lethal Lava Land and Dire Dire Docks. The Secret Aquarium. So many, many things that make this the best, too many to list!!Super Mario Sunshine and Galaxy are awesome too, even though some parts of Sunshine feels more like work. The cleaning up with FLUDD just feels like work but most of the game is really cool. Also, I really love the music in Galaxy. A lot of it is orchestrated and I love how they have the airship music from SMB3 in this remixed. I love all three main themes of these games: castle, tropical and space.I love this collection and highly recommend it!

It’s literally what is described. You get the game cartridge with 3 FANTASTIC games with one of the only changes being a voice line from Mario being swapped for something else in SM64 when he throws Bowser. You also get the Original Soundtracks for all 3 of the games as well. Most people will complain that you don’t get the manuals or the pretty super box arts or even remastered content. Nintendo never said that they would remaster or deliver Quality of Life changes to these games. These are strictly the games and their respective soundtracks. 3 amazing games for 60 dollars actually isn’t bad considering these games separately can cost you well over $100-$200 if you wanted to play them on their original consoles. If you are looking for a trip down memory lane without all the bells and whistles of older consoles and CRT televisions, this is the product for you. Happy gaming!

The first time I played Mario 64 I was 10 years old. It was one of the first console games I had ever played. Over the years, I have tried emulators and the DS game that was released but neither of those came close to the original expectations I had when playing this game. This did. I’m so happy I purchased it. Getting to replay the same levels from my childhood and making the same mistakes, but also playing better and getting stars that used to be impossible for me to get is pretty cool. Kind of like having a conversation with your younger self. Playing this game in this format was very fulfilling for me. That said, the camera is a bit difficult to deal with. The format isn’t a problem at all. Minor things for me.Another reason for buying this game is… I grew up poor, I never got a Gamecube or a Wii so I never got the chance to play Sunshine or Galaxy. I jumped at the chance to get all 3 games for 20 bucks each basically.I’ve been wishing for something like this to happen ever since I got a switch. 10 year old me cried when I was able to play Mario 64 in a handheld comfortably the DS version was such a letdown.

Three great Mario classics in one title. Nintendo did a good job porting these titles, the graphics are clean and sharp, and the controls are intuitive despite using different button layouts than were available on the original N64 / Gamecube / Wii. You do lose some functionality in the translation, for example, the switch joycons lack pressure sensitivity, however this only marginally affects game play and is far from a deal breaker.I also like how they included the music library of all three games in a separate music player which allows you to listen with the screen off conserving battery. If you grew up with these classics or want to introduce them to a new generation, definitely pick this up before Nintendo pulls it from shelves next Spring!

  5. Jaxon

This is the best way to experience these games, period. The games have all been upscaled to HD resolution and they look amazing because of it. In my opinion Super Mario Galaxy benefits the most from this, it is an already beautiful game that is finally in full 1080p resolution. I should note every game here controls EFFORTLESSLY on Nintendo Switch. The controls for Super Mario 64 are especially impressive, considering how poorly the game ran on Wii and Wii U. Super Mario Sunshine gets a much needed widescreen addition, which really helps the game. And for those of you concerned with how Galaxy has been adapted, rest assured the game works great (if not even better) with the option to use traditional controls instead of motion controls. My only gripe with this collection is the lack of Super Mario Galaxy 2, which I desperately hoping is added down the line as paid DLC. The collection lacks a lot of features used to flesh out other collections (such as a museum or a promotional material showcase), but I personally believe this collection is perfectly fine without it. You NEED this in your life if you are a Mario fan, period.

Whether Mario All Stars 3D is worth it will differ among people. Objectively, it isn’t. It’s $60 for a fairly barebones emulation of 3 very old games. For $40 you can get full on remakes like Crash Trilogy, Spyro, Tony Hawk Pro Skater, Destroy All Humans!, and Mafia Definitive Edition. Nintendo knows a collection of some of their best Mario games would sell, so they did the least amount of effort for maximum profit and even made it a limited time offer to salt the wound even further. Why did I review it 5 stars? Mario Galaxy is not a complete emulation. It runs natively on the Switch’s cpu. This means 60 FPS smooth buttery goodness with graphics and gameplay that hold up extremely well in 2020. It’s one of my favorite games of all time, and for me I know I will get $60 of enjoyment out of having it on my switch alongside Sunshine and 64. It’s just a shame Nintendo didn’t go the extra mile to make a truly special anniversary package.

  7. Joffrey Baratheon

This is an awesome Super Mario 3D Collection! Well worth $50! Don’t listen to the detractors – yes these are older games, but they look and play great on the Switch. All three are excellent HD versions of theses classic Super Mario games! You can’t beat the value if you love Super Mario!

  8. UnhappyLittleMan

Honestly, I’m really happy with this game. I got it a day early before release which was great. When you boot the game there are six options: the three games in HD quality and the three soundtracks. Super Mario 64 looks great and feels much better with a switch pro controller compared to the janky old 64 controllers. Buy this game. Get a tattoo of Mario. Name your children Mario and Green Mario.

  9. Jason

I was born in 2000, I remember being a kid when galaxy released and it was a huge deal. Galaxy alone makes this collection worth it. Super Mario 64 is amazing as well, I remember playing with the girl next door on her 64 as a kid. It was the first modern Mario game and even though it came out in 96′ its an amazing game even today. Sunshine is sunshine…it is what it is…This collection plays like a dream, playing galaxy with a standard pro controller is something I didn’t know I needed in my life. This is 100% worth it for any Mario fan.

  10. MagdalenaSenger

Ignore the haters….this collection is an incredible value. Every game runs fine without any issues. The graphics are decent. And they few improvements that were made make the experience alot better. Such as adding pro controller support to Galaxy. The quality of how well these games run is even better than something like BOTW. I’m convinced that the hate this game recieves are from salty entitled gamers who are upset that the game wasn’t given the Crash Bandicoot or Spyro treatment.
