  1. Plastic Fantastic

Informative book on this rather narrow subject. More colour shots would have been nice but overall it looks a good piece of research.

  2. Lynette Baxter

    superb book

  3. Jonathan Mattson

This is not a very detailed detailed engineering view on the development, design, and operational use of torpedoes. But I feel the author was very clear of that fact in the introduction of the book. And he provides references for further reading if further details are desired. The operational use was very brief as I expected but I enjoyed how the author referenced basic details about the weird varieties of early "torpedoes". I think the basic idea of the whitehead is fairly known, but the other ideas I wasn’t as aware of.Besides the development and operational use the portion related to torpedo defense was fascinating to me. The different methods tried and how some completely failed. Makes you wonder if the defense is so hard that if the Americans had working torpedoes in early world war two if they would have handled things better. And with how the two modern operational examples went, how would a massive submarine that be handled now?

  4. Patrick A Moore

Very comprehensive and readable book. Used it as a comparative resource for my portfolio of maritime technology talks.

  5. John E. Tiehen

Great reference and great help in war-game design.

  6. Kalikiano Kalei

The only other superbly accomplished reference on the naval torpedo you’ll ever need! This is a masterful book, most engaging, extremely well researched and definitively produced! I found myself caught up in it such that it literally WAS hard to put down. Along with the other ‘best’ modern book about naval torpedoes (‘Ship Killers’, see my earlier review), this reference does not disappoint in the slightest way. It belongs on your shelf as few others do! Of course, any time a book claims to be ‘a complete reference’, one should always remain initially somewhat skeptical, since that’s usually a rather huge claim to substantiate. Rest assured, however, that the use of ‘complete’ in this book’s title is WELL deserved in every way!

  7. Ellin Books

This book is well written, and covers the history of the torpedo. Details of its use in two world wars are given. A very good book on the subject.

This is a good book on the history and development of a major weapon system. I rate it highly but it’s not a subject one really loves. As in other books by this publisher, the photographs are superb, and the research is excellent.Note that this is the history of a system, not really a history of naval battles or submarine campaigns, although those are mentioned and the last section of the book is titled "Notable Torpedo Actions and Incidents." The incidents include ships sunk by their own torpedoes, and one when the destroyer USS William D. Porter accidentally launched a torpedo at the battleship USS Iowa, that had on board President Roosevelt, Chief of Naval Operations Admiral King, and the Secretary of State (an assassination attempt was first suspected). The book covers the early history (including 200 years ago when the American Robert Fulton, of steamboat fame offered an early torpedo concept to Napoleon and to the British). The book follows ideas and developments, including the spar torpedo (which sank an important vessel each from the Union and Confederate Navies). Some of the ideas are not the usual idea of torpedo, such as exploding motorboats and suicide torpedoes. If that sounds odd, remember the USS Cole in the Middle East. The Japanese had something like 7,000 of these motorboats ready to greet the Allied invasion. Both world wars get covered in terms of torpedo development, including the famed Japanese Long Lance torpedo and the remarkably persistent US du.

A lot of information about torpedoes history and their supporting equipment and use, on air, coastal batteries, and use on ships and ubmarines. Also has some surprise history notes a lot of battles using torpedoes that don’t get attention of the major actions.
