I don’t love this book like I love God or my wife. The "L" word is over-used these days. But, I have to say this book is the most exhaustive treatise I’ve ever seen on this subject. Since I am not an expert on torpedoes, I can’t say how exhaustive. But, for me,where I am, it covers the subject more and better than anything else I’ve seen. Great text and superb illustrations!

Extremely interesting. Much more historical information about the torpedo and the changes it caused than I was expecting. I could not put it down. Very well written. Not a data-dump like some military history books are. Again hard to put down. A must have for any naval or military history library of all sizes.

While this is a relatively small book (256 pages including index), it does a very thorough job of covering the history of torpedoes, their delivery vehicles, and torpedo countermeasures. The writing style is crisp and to the point, and it includes the best collection of torpedo photographs that I have ever seen. I am a big fan of naval history and I found this book a real “page turner”.The subject of torpedoes is an immense one. The author acknowledges in the book’s Introduction that a complete history of the torpedo would take thousands of pages. However, Branfill-Cook has done an excellent job of focusing on the key technologies and incorporating information from many sources, including the web.If you are looking for a bit different approach to the early history of torpedoes, I would supplement this work with “

A must for those interested in naval history. Needs error check before reprinting.

A magnificent book. What more can one say

One of a number of recent books on the automotive torpedo, this one garners higher marks from me for several reasons. First, it has a comprehensive review of all of the other contenders in the torpedo sweepstakes (although it’s a bit short on diagrams in some areas). Second, he fully develops the Whitehead weapon, with almost enough in the way of diagrams. Finally, he offers some coverage on the aiming systems, something that is missing in most of the other books on the topic. That said, it’s only another brick in the wall. Most of my books are packed up at the moment, but the one that sticks in my mind as being a good entry into the topic is The Devil’s Device. But, there’s also Nineteenth-Century Torpedoes and Their Inventors, by the same author, plus a number of better illustrated "picture" books published since.

A good book, maybe lacking more deep in the technical aspects,, but enjoyable
Gary Vander Ploeg –
A well written and detailed history of the torpedo from early conceptions to modern high tech weapons.

If you’re looking for just one book on the subject (which is fundermental to naval warfare in the modern era) then this it, all wrapped up in one book.
