The story is set in the town of Springdale, where a young boy named Nate is out looking for insects, only to find a Yo-kai named Whisper. The mischievous creature gives Nate a special watch that lets him see other Yo-kai hidden throughout the game. You can find and befriend more than 200 uniquely skilled Yo-kai around Springdale, that is after defeating them in battle.

I know most gamers won’t put this “Pokemon wannabe” on this top Games of 2019 list, but it has certainly made mine. I felt like Yo-kai Watch 2 was an okay game, but it didn’t really stand out as a sequel. After I beat YW2, I didn’t feel like doing much of its post game. I was kind of hesitant to get Yo-kai Watch 3 because I of how underwhelming 2 was. I decide to purchase it just see if it was improvement and it was.The male protagonist from the previous games, Nate Adams, moves to the country BBQ (which is the game’s equivalent to the USA). Meanwhile we are also introduced to a new female character named Hailey Anne Thomas, who replaces Katie Forester as the female protagonist of the previous games in the hometown of Springdale, the main location of the previous games as well. Unlike the previous games, where you get chose between the male and female characters; in 3, you play as both. I find this to be interesting gameplay mechanic to switch between the two characters and see how their two story lines connect with each other, Nate in BBQ and Hailey in Springdale.There is also a new horror mini game called Zombie Night, where if the game sets up to have Nate to wake up in zombies in BBQ at midnight and must navigate through town during the infestation to ring a spirit bell to rid it for the night. I find to much more fun compared to Terror Time of the previous games (which still exists in this game, but only in Springdale and not in BBQ).There are plenty of new Yo-kai in thi.

As far as localization goes in the west, it isn’t as popular but the game holds up for the series and in a special place in my heart. It is not a ripoff of Pokemon in fact it’s extremely different!
