This game is incredibly addicting. To start, the intro does a fairly decent job of getting players started in their hunting career. The story is quite uninspired and doesn’t feel like Capcom spent much effort on it. But honestly, no one plays monster hunter for the story. This game starts off very easy but can become very difficult if the player doesn’t practice analyzing monsters or spend time grinding monsters for gear. This time around, however, finding help is much more accessible (3u for the 3ds didn’t have online multiplayer unless you owned a Wiiu) because online multiplayer is built in. It has its own lobby search with filters to choose specific monsters or quest type or hunter ranks (hunters your level or below).Once you’ve gotten a good grip of low rank, you ascend in difficulty with stronger monsters (more defense and attack) that allows you to craft better gear (monster armor and several weapons). Most of the game may seem like a never ending grindfest for better gear to survive just a little longer against monsters higher in rank but there is an end. That end comes in the form of Apex monsters. Essentially the same monsters with increased damage (some attacks one hit ko) along with newer move sets to get used to.This game is one of the biggest monster hunter games in the series but may not be suitable for all gamers as it’s focus is on large monster battles only and nothing else. I’m also writing this in 2am to pass time so please excuse the format and sub par revi.

It’s wonderful when a game drags you in because you yourself are intersted, having fun, invested; not because the game is holding your hand. This game isn’t for everyone, you do need a bit of personal drive but this game is great if you allow yourself the time to get into it.Crafting up better gear, learning fights, dodging around, gathering, all of these are a process and learned skills that you develop within the game. Not to mention you can do it all solo or online!

It’s monster hunter 3, which is awesome by the way, but vastly improved. The user interface is cleaner and intuitively customizable. The loading times are shorter. There are new ways to combat monsters and navigate terrain which makes gameplay more fluid and enjoyable. If you hated the underwater battles from MH3U, you can rejoice in knowing that those battles are not in this installment. If you loved those battles… I’m sorry… I can’t help you there. You can have up to two palicoes (cat buddies) follow you into battle at a time and you can customize their gear and even name your main palicoe (I named mine Grumpy Tom after the bassist of Turbonegro). Plus it has a ton of FREE DLC to keep you playing.I do wish there was a WiiU version but this game is still awesome. If you like spectacle fighters like Devil May Cry, games like Onimusha, or Shadow of the Colosus for its boss fights mixed in with some pseudo RPG elements… Then you will probably love this game.If you are someone who needs a score… I give Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate a 8.75 out of 10.
