From the very first season — first episode — even the way they use the camera to give the feel of being filmed live — you know this is something amazing and different than anything you have ever seen. Not preachy. Not politically correct. But a bit gritty, like real life. The characters are all flawed. They all have good and bad aspects and some do grow and change a bit as seasons progress — but others don’t. Each season deals with a new theme for the A-12 Unit (the equivalent of US Internal Affairs division – the department that overseas and investigates corruption within the police department). Each season also has some overarching themes. One of my favorite things is watching the amazing way the A-12 conduct their interviews with suspects starting with wide general questions and slowly nailing down the facts and encircling their ‘prey’ in a snare of lies of their own making.Like any British TV crime drama of this caliber: you have to pay close attention.Use the Closed Captioning so you don’t miss the conversations because there is a LOT going on.Totally re watchable because of the dense plot lines. This is NOT an Action Thriller (though there is action) but more of a slow burn, riveting, roller coaster ride. The producers of this series seem to have deliberately compressed the seasons into fewer episodes than the usual 8 – 10 so that the tension is ratcheted up a notch.Wow, everyone has something to hide and a secret agenda. You will love it.

This is one of the top British detective series and Season 5 further cements its status there. The series focuses upon an anti-corruption unit that finds and sorts out bent coppers. It is ‘internal affairs’ writ large, but we do not viscerally dislike the unit the way we dislike ‘internal affairs’. Across the seasons there is an overarching plot line in which the AC-12 team attempt to find the person or persons at the top of law enforcement who are colluding with criminal organizations. A corrupt member of AC-12 died, his eyes apparently blinking a response to the letter ‘H’. There are several top officers whose surnames begin with that letter, among them Ted Hastings (played by Adrian Dunbar) who leads AC-12.In season five we meet the criminal organization up close and personal. The first episode (of 6; the last is a double episode) shows us a hijacking of a convoy which is transferring police-captured drugs to a location where the drugs will be destroyed. Several officers are killed in the ambush/hijacking but we learn that the head of the criminal team is an undercover detective sergeant. What? Has he crossed the line? Gone rogue? Done whatever he had to to convince his comrades that he is as dirty as they are?I will not disclose the ensuing plot lines, but suffice to say that they are complex (though not convoluted or unintelligible). We learn more about ‘H’ at the end and now know enough to prepare ourselves for what is likely to be the crescendo conclusion i.

In my opinion, this is one of the best, if not the best, TV shows the Brits have produced. Seasons 1 through 4 is the kind of show that keeps you at the edge of your seat. Season 5, however, is a bit slower in pace and action. It requires intentional attention to follow the plot. The previous four seasons stories fall, mainly, on the two main characters: Steve and Kate, this one not so much and I missed that. I hope that they are more involves in season six. I can already see the potential for Steve getting into trouble due to his medication for his back injury and Kate failing at achieving that impossible balance between her kind of work and family. And of course, the new recruit… I enjoyed the decision of bringing actress Anna Maxwell Martin as DCS Carmichael; I hope that she comes back for the sixth season. Out of the five seasons so far, in my opinion, this one is the weakest, as opposed to other reviewers, but it is still a really good show unmatched by few. It is not a shallow story, the characters are not perfect nor are they superheroes, they don’t wear the latest fashion trends and their hair and make-up are not relied upon to make up for weak storylines or acting. This is not your typical commercial Hollywood/network show. That is a good thing. retrolio Studios, with the resources that they have, should take a page or two from Jed Mercurio’s and BBC’s book.

Binge watched 4 years with my wife and we both really liked the characters and production. Happy to buy the fifth season rather than wait for it to stream for free. Another excellent BBC series.

  5. K Mitchell

I’ve been hooked on this series since Season 2. Season 5 didn’t disappoint. Continuation of great acting, storyline, suspense and bent coppers!

  6. Writer guy

This is a great show but unlike the other seasons, this season made you want to binge watch Season 6 (which does not exist as of this date). Should have been a self contained season that wrapped up its storyline. Season 6 (which has been ordered) could easily pick up where Season 5 left off without Season 5 ending with sort of a cliffhanger. That said, great acting, tense moments, and a twisting storyline. I thought some of the interview segments were waaaaaaaay drawn out, but it works. The woman from The Bletchley Circle was brilliant and you really hated her (signs of a great actress). The woman who played Lisa not only broke a lot of molds for her character ‘type’ (it could have easily been played by a white male), but showed a great range of acting abilities. And Adrian Dunbar went through every emotion in the book, although his character did some really, really stupid things that were literally ‘out of character’ for a seasoned anti-corruption officer.

Riveting Nd raw…BEST season yet! Line of Duty is one of my favorite series to watch and Season 5 deserves awards, in my opinion. Great cast, writing and storyline. May there be more Line of Duty seasons to come!

  8. Corrie Ciufi

    LOVED IT!

  9. DlingC

One of the best crime shows I’ve ever watched (and I’ve watched A LOT)

  10. R. J. Byington
