I originally got this game without knowing how simplistic it was. I, personally, would have liked something a bit more difficult. I’m not going to rehash what’s said in a lot of the other reviews about game play, etc. What really struck me is how great it has been for my nephew. He’s 5-years-old and has Downs. After playing a few times, he does it on his own and knows which instruments he has to strum and which he has to push buttons to blow horns. Its been fun for him and I think beneficial for his motor skills. He especially loves the dog suit, cat suit, and cheerleader instruments. He goes crazy with the dancing around. Rock on little man!

My family got this game for Christmas and we’ve been playing it almost constantly since we unwrapped the box. We’re musicians, so we may be biased in favor of it — but that also means that we can see the potential in the game.To play the basic form of this game, you choose a piece of music and an instrument each for up to four players. The number of available songs and instruments increases as you play — we’ve just added a sitar to our collection. Players are divided up into melody, harmonies, and percussion (if you choose — you can also do “Ode to Joy” on Dog Suit and ukelele if you want to) and everyone plays. You can have “sheet music” to guide you if you like, but in any case, all players can control tempo and phrasing of the piece and otherwise add their own creative touches. You can play with friends or lay down multiple tracks and put everything together to make videos. You can conduct the orchestra of Miis — several conductors together can work to achieve “chemistry” together, too, a surprisingly challenging task. There are also games to work on pitch and rhythm, all of which were fun and which would also be excellent for ear training or music classes. There are options involving the Wii balance board, too — that’s an addition to our wish list, for sure.As you play, “lessons” are offered to you. Doing well with them leads to more options in the game. I assume that this means the game will grow with the players.Kids can certainly play this game, adults will find the.
Hi Desert Dean –
I wanted to get this “game” when I first heard about it, and after reading several reviews (with scores ranging from 1.0 to 10.0),decided to try it myself. After playing several hours, I have found Wii Music to be entertaining, educational, and most of all FUN!!!It is not a traditional “game”, that’s why some gamers are giving it lower scores. However, if you look at it as a musical instrument (or several) you will find it’s secret.I have always wished I could play music, but have had no training. Yet within minutes, I was playing solo on the flute to Jingle Bell Rock, with a back up band. After playing and then watching the video replay (which is a nice feature), I found myself wanting to improve my performance, regardless of scoring. Then I tried the saxaphone. Then, acoustic guitar….. The combinations are endless! I did find that, either some of the instruments don’t play as well, or I don’t play them as well! Some reviews say the sound is terrible. It’s not perfect, but it’s also not like opening a musical Christmas card. It is more than good enough to acheive what it’s meant to (make you feel you are playing an instrument). The graphics also get the job done (unless you’ve created a Mii that doesn’t suit you).Anybody who wants to imitate a rock star, get Guitar Hero or Rock Band. However, if you have ever had any interest in really playing a musical instrument (like me) get this “game”. YOU WILL ENJOY IT!!!!!!

Wii Music is not Guitar Hero. That must be said right away. If you are looking for Guitar Hero or something like Guitar Hero, look elsewhere because you will not enjoy this game.HOWEVER……..if you’ve ever played music, and/or understand the basic concepts behind jazz improv, or really just want to learn the basic concepts behind music, you will love everything about this game! The concepts of tempo, rhythm and even a little bit of chord structure are all in this game and are done very well. Maybe a little more “educational” than most people want, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. But the best part is the custom jam section. Like I said, this is basic jazz improv, and it’s basic jazz improv at its best! Pick a song, a part and an instrument, and then go to town! Just like soloing, the basic chord structure is presented in front of you and you can either play the part as written or play whatever rhythm you want…but you don’t have to worry about playing right notes! You just play the rhythm you want and the notes will come out correctly for you! It’s awesome! So if you have ever been in some sort of high school or college band, or any band really, and understand that when a C is written you can either play a C, or a G, or alternate between the two in a basic eighth note triplet pattern, then you will fall in love with this game!

I’m a music teacher, and bought this game for my 5 year old daughter as she requested it for her birthday. She and my 6 year old son have been loving it for the past 3 days. I’ve loved what I’ve seen so far! I really didn’t know much about the game before I purchased it, other than what I read on here, and have been pleasantly surprised. It is a “gentle” game and I like that it isn’t super loud and raucous. It is also very educational in the music field, while also being a lot of fun for the kids. It does require a lot of reading, but my 6 year old has been able to do that, and for the younger kids a parent or older sibling can do that for them. Its a GREAT family game, esp. if you have 4 remotes. You can save your “jam sessions” and add to them, create videos, play games that are in essence fun quizzes about music topics, play songs with simpler “rock band” type song sheets, and play just about every instrument out there using the wii remote, nunchuck, and balance board. (I’m sure there is more, but that’s all my kids have figured out on their own to this point.) Your Miis are automatically brought over in cool new looks. While I think its great for families, and anyone can have fun with the game, my highest rating and appropriateness would be for the elementary/middle school level.

It has been great for my sons memory skills and focusing. It has some great mini games for those types of challenges that he faces in school.

I remember reading one of the negative reviews here on retrolio for Wii Music where it was compared to a $25 electric keyboard from a “mega box” store. While I don’t agree with his opinion of Wii Music, I do think he had a point. Wii Music is closer to an electronic instrument/toy like an electronic keyboard than a rhythm video game like Guitar Hero and Rock Band. That is probably why there have been a number of people who have found it boring. Unless you like music and like playing around with music you are going to find both an electric keyboard and Wii Music boring after a couple of hours. The only “score” you get from either one of them is your opinion or the opinion of your “audience” (excluding the mini games in Wii Music which are scored). In my mind the question isn’t should you get Guitar Hero, Rock Band or Wii Music, but should you get an electronic instrument or Wii Music. In that spirit, I felt it was worthwhile to compare Wii Music to an equivalently priced electric keyboard. I picked the Casio SA75 since I felt it had a decent amount of features for the price. There are of course many other electric keyboards or other electronic midi devices with lots of other features, but most of them cost more (around the $500+ range for the really good ones) than the $49.99 that Wii Music and the Casio SA75 are currently selling at. See below for my comparison.Feature: Available Tones/InstrumentsWii Music – 65 different “instruments”. I thought the quality of sound was.

After a couple of months of ownership, I would say that this is a good game for very specific audiences:1) My 3 year old daughter and I have enjoyed making videos, and it’s actually a plus that the song selection contains songs like Twinkle Twinkle. At 3 you can’t really expect them to get the instruments right, but the fun part for her is to play to video back and dance to it. We’ll see how her enjoyment changes as she develops.2) I have some silly silly friends who enjoyed picking characters and doing stunts in the videos that had us busting up. But after a while, we decided we’d had enough and we switched to Rock Band.

I’ve seen lots of people from many different age groups and backgrounds enjoy playing this game since we bought it. It’s fun just to watch others play, too, so it’s a great party entertainer. We have four remotes and nunchucks, which really helps bring this game to life for family entertainment fun.
