Super Mario Sunshine

Super Mario Sunshine is a 2002 platform game develop and publish by Nintendo for the GameCube. It is the second 3D game in the Super Mario series, following Super Mario 64 (1996). The game was direct by Yoshiaki Koizumi and Kenta Usui. Produce by series creators Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka, written by Makoto Wada. And score by Koji Kondo and Shinobu Tanaka.

However, the game takes place on the tropical Isle Delfino, where Mario, Toadsworth, Princess Peach. And five Toads are taking a vacation. A villain resembling Mario, known as Shadow Mario, vandalizes the island with graffiti. And leaves Mario to be wrongfully convict for the mess. Also Mario is order to clean up Isle Delfino, using a device the Flash Liquidizer Ultra Dousing Device (F.L.U.D.D.). While saving Princess Peach from Shadow Mario.

Super Mario Sunshine receive critical acclaim, with reviewers praising the game’s graphics, gameplay, story, soundtrack, and the addition of F.L.U.D.D. as a mechanic. Though some criticize the game’s camera and F.L.U.D.D.’s gimmicky nature. Moreover, the game sold over five million copies worldwide by 2006, making it one of the best-selling GameCube games. The game was re-release as a part of the Player’s Choice brand in 2003. Nintendo EPD rerelease it alongside Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy in the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection for the Nintendo Switch in 2020.

Gameplay

Super Mario Sunshine shares many similar gameplay elements with its predecessor, Super Mario 64, while introducing various new gameplay features. Players control Mario as he tries to obtain 120 Shine Sprites in order to bring light back to Isle Delfino and prove his innocence. After Bowser Jr. (disguise as Mario) steals the Shine Sprites and covers the island in toxic slime. Players start off in the hub world of Delfino Plaza and access various worlds via portals which become available as the game progresses.

Similar to collecting Stars in Super Mario 64, players obtain Shine Sprites by clearing a select mission with a specific objective. Unlike its predecessor, these missions have a more strictly linear order and most other mission Shine Sprites cannot collect until the previous missions are complete. There are also various hidden areas and challenges across Isle Delfino where more Shine Sprites can be obtain. Throughout the game, players may also find Blue Coins hidden across the island, which can be exchange for more Shine Sprites in the boathouse at Delfino Plaza.

F.L.U.D.D. (Flash Liquidizing Ultra Dousing Device)

However, in this game, Mario is join by a robotic backpack name F.L.U.D.D. (Flash Liquidizing Ultra Dousing Device). Which uses the power of water to clean away goop and help Mario reach new places. Mario starts with two default nozzles for F.L.U.D.D. Squirt and Hover, which he can quickly switch between. The Squirt nozzle lets Mario spray a stream of water which he can use to clean sludge, attack enemies, and activate certain mechanisms. The Hover nozzle lets Mario hover in the air for a short period of time, allowing him to cross large gaps while simultaneously spraying things directly below him.

As the game progresses, Mario unlocks two additional nozzles for F.L.U.D.D. Which can be substitute with the Hover nozzle: the Rocket nozzle. It shoots Mario high up into the air; and the Turbo nozzle. And moves Mario at high speeds, allowing him to run across water and break into certain areas. Each of F.L.U.D.D.’s nozzles use water from its reserves, which can be refill via water sources such as rivers or fountains.

Secret Courses

There are also various secret courses where F.L.U.D.D. is taken away from Mario, forcing him to rely on his natural platforming abilities. Unlike Super Mario 64, Mario can no longer long jump. He can instead perform a spin jump by twirling the analog stick and jumping, allowing Mario to jump higher and farther. Mario can also now perform dives at any time, giving Mario the ability to slide quickly across wet surfaces and serve as another alternative to the long jump.

At certain points in the game, Mario may come across an egg which hatches into a Yoshi after being brought a fruit he asks for. Yoshi can be ridden upon and can attack by spitting juice. Which can clear certain obstacles that water cannot. Yoshi can also use his tongue to eat enemies or other pieces of fruit which change his color, depending on the type of fruit. Yoshi will disappear if he runs out of juice or falls into deep water. Juice can be replenish by eating more fruit.

Love these games, and having a ton of fun revisiting these titles. I Highly recommend this to any Nintendo fans. All three games play very smoothly, and the controls are adapted well. I advise you to buy your now as this is a limited release. Like many Nintendo products the only problem will be that they will only make so many, avoid scalpers and buy it now. That being said it is worth the download if you don’t care about getting the physical copy.

Great for nostalgia! I was excited when I heard this was coming out! They could have done better with the menu screens and maybe adding anything else. But it’s just the three games and their soundtracks. I loved N64 so I’m just thrilled to be sliding with penguins and the other two I barely played so super psyched to try them. I played N64 Mario first! So far, happy!

  3. The One Who Wrote This

Likes:+Being able to play Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy on the same system in HD. You could only do this on the Wii in standard definition, so this is definitely a step up.+All 3 titles look really clear.+Sunshine is now in 16:9, which REALLY helps with the game IMHO.+I actually disliked Sunshine’s original inverted controls, so I like the fact that the camera and aiming is not inverted. This is just a me thing though as others dislike the lack of inverted controls.+Galaxy has the spin tied to the Y button.+Kinda minor, but the initial load from the Switch menu to the game menu is VERY quick. This is likely because the majority of the loading is done after you choose one of the games within the collection.Dislikes:-Barebones UI for the menu.-Lack of an Art Gallery and a Video Gallery that other collections like the Mega Man X Legacy Collection had. You just have the games and the soundtracks.-Would’ve liked a remastered port or remake like what Crash and Spyro had instead of 3 emulations, but you get what you can get with Nintendo.-I dislike the fact that this is a limited release as this will encourage scalpers to buy everything until there’s no stock remaining and then sell it at a higher price.-No more “So Long, King Bowser!” or backwards long jump glitch for speedrunning. Minor gripes, but still gripes.-Weird editing for Fludd’s explanation of how the controls work in Sunshine.Overall, a solid collection, but it could be a bit better. I’d re.

I have been having SO much fun with this! On the title screen, you can select what game you want to play OR listen to the soundtrack for any of the three games. Once you select your game, it transports you to the “main menu” of the game you selected. So far, the modifications to the Switch have been great and just take a little adjusting. Mario 64 is still a little janky with the controls and I wish you could edit/modify them, but you cannot. However, the controls were always a little odd so it’s not a surprise. Still able to navigate it and complete the levels. I’ve been having a LOT of fun and am shocked with how much I remember about these games from my childhood! Would recommend if you enjoy these games or have any interest in this set—especially since Nintendo said it’s a limited release game (selling until the end of March I believe).

This collection doesn’t have much to it aside from these three games and their soundtracks but honestly that is already one incredible package. This is also the fastest Switch game to boot up it’s almost seamless from home to game which is pretty impressive. I will do a quick breakdown of each game and if they are superior to the originalMario 64 is a touch up of the Shindou version, this means it has some bug fixes but most importantly or at least the one change that stands out the most is Mario says “bye bye” when throwing bowser as oppose to “so long king bowser” overall, this is a great version to play but keep in mind it’s the only game of this collection running at 30FPSMario Sunshine is dressed up very nicely here and is running at a smooth 60 FPS 1080p but it does feel a bit weird to me. This might be a me thing as I didn’t play much sunshine in the past but it’s definitely a much better version of the game than the original as far as visuals and gameplay.Mario Galaxy has to be the best it’s ever been here, once again 60FPS and 1080 the controls work great whether you are using the joy cons, the pro controller, or handheld. I will admit, handheld might be the least intuitive out of the three as you need to touch the screen to collect starbits. However, the Switch version added your spin attack as it’s own button now, which is really nice to have the only motion needed is for collecting bitsOverall, awesome collection and I would love to see more of these from Nintend.

I never played any of these 3 games until the purchase of this game cart. I’ve also never owned the original consoles for which these games initially debuted. While many in the comments will give their opinions based on specifications and nostalgia, I basically am giving this review as someone looking at this with fresh eyes/hands.Super Mario 64: it looks fine but the 3rd person camera placement is difficult to work with. The graphics are solidly outdated, but if you’ve never played before, the mechanics aren’t terrible. It’s “good for what it is”, which is basically my way of saying that I might come back to it later. I had similar camera troubles with Ocarina of Time for the 3DS. I think I may just be too old to go back to this one.Super Mario Sunshine: the idea of having Mario/Princes/Character dialogue is interesting, but a little off-putting. The game itself is pretty fun. Unlike Mario U or 3DLand (mostly side scrolling), the worlds/levels feels far more open. The mechanics took some time to get used to both docked and undocked, but I can say that I enjoyed playing this game. It feels like a not-mario Mario game. In some ways I can see Breath of the Wild having been influenced by some design aspects of this game in particular.Super Mario Galaxy: I’m still getting used to this one, but it’s a very fun game and graphically and gameplay wise a bit more interesting as well as advanced. This one I haven’t beaten, but I think I would already like to play the follow-up.

Nintendo is taking ideas straight from Todd Howard: If you re-release the same game it will sell. You don’t question Todd when you’ve boughten Skyrim for every single console and your Alexa. Mario is like skyrim in that regard, you got 6 other copies but you still want to get this one too. I did it and so will you.Anyways I digress, the game does look a little better than it used too. Don’t expect 4k dolby digital masterpiece and you won’t be disappointed. Also you have to download most of the games even though they have a cartridge.

I’m 28 years old. These three games were some of the defining ones of my life at different points. And now they’ve come in HD to the Nintendo Switch, and I couldn’t be any more ecstatic. Some people might complain that these games (particularly SM64) weren’t remade akin to Spyro/Crash/etc trilogies. In my opinion, that doesn’t detract from anything at all. Would it have been nice? Sure, but these games are some of the best games of all time, and the original graphics create that nostalgia that I feel Nintendo was going for with this compilation.I can’t wait to sink my time into all 3 of these classics again, and I’m grateful that the switch now has almost all of Mario’s greatest games on it. Here’s hoping Galaxy 2 is around the corner in some form!

  10. Mariofan105

I’ve been a Mario fan my whole life, and Super Mario 3D All Stars is a dream come true for me. You only have until the end of March 2021 to get this game, so if you want it, you don’t want to wait long. The case is fantastic and inside case art is icing on the cake. The menu is classy, clean, simple, and a treat to your ears because Mario music from the 3 games will play. You also have all 3 games’ soundtracks on the menu to listen to. All 3 games have been enhanced & look great. The controls for all 3 games work well and these games really prove that they are timeless classics. If you own a Nintendo Switch, this is must have game!
