Super Mario Sunshine

Super Mario Sunshine is a 2002 platform game develop and publish by Nintendo for the GameCube. It is the second 3D game in the Super Mario series, following Super Mario 64 (1996). The game was direct by Yoshiaki Koizumi and Kenta Usui. Produce by series creators Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka, written by Makoto Wada. And score by Koji Kondo and Shinobu Tanaka.

However, the game takes place on the tropical Isle Delfino, where Mario, Toadsworth, Princess Peach. And five Toads are taking a vacation. A villain resembling Mario, known as Shadow Mario, vandalizes the island with graffiti. And leaves Mario to be wrongfully convict for the mess. Also Mario is order to clean up Isle Delfino, using a device the Flash Liquidizer Ultra Dousing Device (F.L.U.D.D.). While saving Princess Peach from Shadow Mario.

Super Mario Sunshine receive critical acclaim, with reviewers praising the game’s graphics, gameplay, story, soundtrack, and the addition of F.L.U.D.D. as a mechanic. Though some criticize the game’s camera and F.L.U.D.D.’s gimmicky nature. Moreover, the game sold over five million copies worldwide by 2006, making it one of the best-selling GameCube games. The game was re-release as a part of the Player’s Choice brand in 2003. Nintendo EPD rerelease it alongside Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy in the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection for the Nintendo Switch in 2020.

Gameplay

Super Mario Sunshine shares many similar gameplay elements with its predecessor, Super Mario 64, while introducing various new gameplay features. Players control Mario as he tries to obtain 120 Shine Sprites in order to bring light back to Isle Delfino and prove his innocence. After Bowser Jr. (disguise as Mario) steals the Shine Sprites and covers the island in toxic slime. Players start off in the hub world of Delfino Plaza and access various worlds via portals which become available as the game progresses.

Similar to collecting Stars in Super Mario 64, players obtain Shine Sprites by clearing a select mission with a specific objective. Unlike its predecessor, these missions have a more strictly linear order and most other mission Shine Sprites cannot collect until the previous missions are complete. There are also various hidden areas and challenges across Isle Delfino where more Shine Sprites can be obtain. Throughout the game, players may also find Blue Coins hidden across the island, which can be exchange for more Shine Sprites in the boathouse at Delfino Plaza.

F.L.U.D.D. (Flash Liquidizing Ultra Dousing Device)

However, in this game, Mario is join by a robotic backpack name F.L.U.D.D. (Flash Liquidizing Ultra Dousing Device). Which uses the power of water to clean away goop and help Mario reach new places. Mario starts with two default nozzles for F.L.U.D.D. Squirt and Hover, which he can quickly switch between. The Squirt nozzle lets Mario spray a stream of water which he can use to clean sludge, attack enemies, and activate certain mechanisms. The Hover nozzle lets Mario hover in the air for a short period of time, allowing him to cross large gaps while simultaneously spraying things directly below him.

As the game progresses, Mario unlocks two additional nozzles for F.L.U.D.D. Which can be substitute with the Hover nozzle: the Rocket nozzle. It shoots Mario high up into the air; and the Turbo nozzle. And moves Mario at high speeds, allowing him to run across water and break into certain areas. Each of F.L.U.D.D.’s nozzles use water from its reserves, which can be refill via water sources such as rivers or fountains.

Secret Courses

There are also various secret courses where F.L.U.D.D. is taken away from Mario, forcing him to rely on his natural platforming abilities. Unlike Super Mario 64, Mario can no longer long jump. He can instead perform a spin jump by twirling the analog stick and jumping, allowing Mario to jump higher and farther. Mario can also now perform dives at any time, giving Mario the ability to slide quickly across wet surfaces and serve as another alternative to the long jump.

At certain points in the game, Mario may come across an egg which hatches into a Yoshi after being brought a fruit he asks for. Yoshi can be ridden upon and can attack by spitting juice. Which can clear certain obstacles that water cannot. Yoshi can also use his tongue to eat enemies or other pieces of fruit which change his color, depending on the type of fruit. Yoshi will disappear if he runs out of juice or falls into deep water. Juice can be replenish by eating more fruit.

Super Mario 3D All Stars is a great collection to relive some of Mario’s greatest adventures. The collection comes with 3 games that all are built to control on the Switch. Super Mario 64 has added rumble, patches a few bugs and has some quality of life additions. While there isn’t things like widescreen for Super Mario 64; Nintendo removed the ugly blur filter that all N64 games have and as a result it looks a lot more smooth and clear for the Nintendo Switch. Something I don’t hear a whole lot of people talk about is how this is a version of Super Mario 64 we NEVER got for North America. It’s called the “Shindou Version” that like I said about adds rumble support & patches a few things which I must say the HD rumble feels nice everytime Mario performs and action. It isn’t distracting and really makes you feel like you’re in the game.Super Mario Sunshine is a game that not everyone is able to play, but now can thanks to this being the first time It’s EVER been released on another platform by Nintendo. It now has widescreen support, which is nice but to me I don’t feel it’s necessary personally. The game is scaled up to 1080p and looks great for being a gamecube game! While Super Mario Sunshine is a rough & challenging game to play to this day, it certainly is a unique experience you won’t find anywhere else and I’d say buying this collection alone for Sunshine is worth it due to Gamecube prices skyrocketing!Super Mario Galaxy has been outfitted to run nearly natively on the.

Ignore the haters….this collection is an incredible value. Every game runs fine without any issues. The graphics are decent. And they few improvements that were made make the experience alot better. Such as adding pro controller support to Galaxy. The quality of how well these games run is even better than something like BOTW. I’m convinced that the hate this game recieves are from salty entitled gamers who are upset that the game wasn’t given the Crash Bandicoot or Spyro treatment.

  3. Natalie C. Mullis

this collection contains 3 games from Mario’s past that were amazing, super Mario 64 was a revolutionary game for its time bringing in amazing 3d graphics for the time which was 1996 and ultimately brought gaming into the 3d era. super Mario sunshine is a weird but ultimately cult classic that has aged tremendously well, Mario galaxy is an incredible classic that brings Mario’s adventures to space. the problem occurs when you realize that they did not remaster the graphics at all and took an approach similar to old movie releases like the terminator or lion king animated and especially the Pixar movies (I wish they would remaster toy story 1-3 with toy story 4 visuals), and for a video game it is a weird approach. and with the limited-time release, you could say Nintendo is taking the Disney vault approach when it comes to there classic games with no word if they are going to rerelease these games on a virtual console containing N64 – GameCube – Wii mainly because the WII u port well is running dry. and sadly galaxy 2 is not included in this and just like Disney censored the racism in the original fantasia. I do think if this collection was released on a later console that Mario Odyssey would be part of the collection. ultimately though if you want to relive your childhood or if you want to experience 1 or 2 or all 3 for the first time then I do think this would be a good buy, and I do think that I would give this 3.5 stars out of 5 but because retrolio won’t let me do that bec.

If you don’t own these on any other platform this is a great way to revisit these beloved classics. Mario 64 is almost tripled it’s original resolution while holding a stable 30 frames per second with this being a port of the revised “Shindou pak taiou” 1997 edition the backwards vault slide glitch was fixed along with the “So long gay bowser” meme but most textures are unchanged. Super Mario Sunshine seems to have had the most attention with more vibrant colors all around as well as the higher resolution resulting in a much less blurry image. However this game also runs at 30 frames per second and the classic GameCube controls have been slightly altered due to differences when compared with the Switch’s Joycons, even when using an adapter (so you can no longer change the water pressure.) Last but not least Mario Galaxy looks sharper than ever with the boost in resolution and transitions to modern displays quite smoothly, motion controls are integrated very well and this is an all around smooth 60fps experience. The soundtrack from all 3 games are also included.

Best versions since the originals and I would say better in some cases. If your a collector or grew up with these games this is a must own. If you played other mario games but not these, give em a shot …. they are timeless.Mario 64 – yah it 4:3….. so was the original. Its been cleaned up and upscaled to 720p. Could they have done better…. maybe but its still an amazing game. Slow down present in the Wii-U version is none existent so this make the best version you can buy.Mario Sunshine – Never looked better. Upgraded to full HD widescreen it looks great and probably the most straight forward to play. While some didn’t like the original I still think its a gem and well worth the time.Mario Galaxy – The most recent also the best looking. Controls are a bit wonky but the mind bending puzzles are unlike anything you see in other Mario games. In summery…. if your a collector or plan to play it mobile buy the cartridge. If not buy the download …. but don’t wait too long as 1st party Nintendo titles don’t depreciate in price like other systems or games. And once its out of print its not getting any cheaper.

This is the best way to play all of these classic games! I loved them as a child, and playing them on the switch truly improves the visuals, making it look how you thought it did as kid. You can’t beat the price for all 3 games in one, and they’re all absolutely amazing! The controls are great, but I do recommend using the pro controller for it! The game will stop being produced after March 2021, and will be taken off the Nintendo E shop at that time as well, so I do recommend picking up a physical or digital copy while you can! You won’t regret it, and it will leave you entertained for many, many hours! :)

You know, it’s a good deal. Three quality games. Don’t get your hopes up. They are not remasters, just enhanced versions. If you’ve never played any of these games before, pick it up if you can. Expecting too much out of Nintendo is the wrong thing to do in this case. It’s a fine, fun game. This game is not a remaster. They are emulated copies.Controls get some getting used to.Again, it’s a great collection. Getting to play Super Mario 64 for the first time is certainly an experience. Sunshine is also quite an experience. While Galaxy has some wonky controls it’s just as good as I remember.Again, it’s a good collection of games. Pick it up while you can, if you can. Don’t give into the no-good scalpers. That is all.

Nintendo did great with this collection. Some things feel a tad barebones (why no Galaxy 2?) but I can’t complain that much. Sunshine and Galaxy have never looked better, and 64, despite being the Shindou version, is still 64 at heart and is wonderful. My only reason for a 4 star is the limited release window. Why push such a good collection with some very obvious effort into the void after March 31st? It’s an odd choice and one I personally dont agree with.

With the addition of controls customization, this would be an easy 5 stars from me. You know these games, you know they’re great, and since you clicked here, you want them in a nice convenient package to play all three on your Switch. If you come into it knowing and accepting this compilation is minimal in terms of extras, you are going to have a great time.Upon firing up the game, you get a little juxtaposition of Mario obtaining a star/shine sprite in all three games, and it plays the jingle for getting a star in Super Mario Galaxy. Simple, but I like it, and it does a good job at getting you excited to revisit these games. The game select menu gives you a brief summary of each game, and plays a song picked at random from one of the three soundtracks. Neat touch! You can also access all three soundtracks and pick whichever song you would like to play while in the menu. This is basically the one “extra feature” of the set.As I mentioned earlier, my biggest complaint is the fact that you can’t customize the controls. The controls are responsive, and are probably the best ones they could have picked as a single control scheme to please everyone, but for people used to the originals, there is just a little bit of getting used to that could have been bypassed if they had some sort of “original controls” option. For Super Mario 64, I like the higher sensitivity in the joy con sticks to the original N64 analog stick. This makes it easier to turn on a dime, which especially helps fo.

This is a great compilation of games but it is very bare bones. It’s just the three games and their respective soundtracks, but that’s enough. These are some of the greatest video games ever made with some of the best soundtracks ever. I love playing Galaxy again and in docked mode with two joycons it works great. Mario sunshine very quickly I noticed that they didn’t fix the camera bug. Kinda disappointing but still the game looks great and controls pretty good. Mario 64 is pretty underwhelming but to able to play the original game in portable is cool. At least it’s better than the DS port. Overall I think it’s worth the price if you like these games. Probably a good gift idea for someone who loves Mario oddesey. I should mention that I preordered this and retrolio didn’t deliver it until 3 days after release.
